The Black Educators in History ecard is in celebration of Black history month. It presents several Black American teachers through our history beginning with a photo of Fanny Jackson Coppin who was the first Black principal in 1869. Then to photo of Susie King Taylor who was the first Black teacher in Georgia in 1862 at age 14. To a photo of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune the 1923 founder of the Bethune Cookman University & Vice President of the NAACP from 1940 to 1955. Next, a photo of Dr. Dorothy Lavinia Brown who was a surgeon, professor at the Meharry Medical College and first Black woman elected to the Tennessee General Assembly. To a photo of Septima Poinsette Clark who was in 1962 the Director of Teaching and Education at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and led the creation of 800+ citizenship schools teaching math and literacy. On the photo Rosa Parks and her mother Leona Edwards Parks. To the final photo of Marva Dolores Collins who founded the Chicago Westside Preparatory School in 1975. The following photo of Marva is with George W Bush and his wife Laura at the White house in 2004 where she was made recipient of the National Medal of Humanities. The final frame reads “Wishing you an enlightening, uplifting Black History Month”.
